Getting Jellusion connected, what to expect from playback, and how to reach us.
Add your server
- On your own network. Launch the app. Jellyfin servers on the local network are discovered automatically and listed on the first screen; tvOS asks once for permission to look for devices on the network. Pick your server.
- Anywhere else. Choose Add Server Manually and type the address you use in a browser, for example
https://jellyfin.example.orgorhttp://192.168.1.20:8096. The app verifies the address before asking you to sign in. - Sign in with your Jellyfin username and password, or choose Quick Connect and approve the code from any signed-in Jellyfin app or the web dashboard.
http:// address works. Many home servers have no certificate, so the app allows plain-HTTP addresses on purpose; it uses TLS whenever the server offers it.Several people on one Apple TV
Each person signs in once; after that the app opens with a Who's watching? selector. Continue Watching, Next Up, favourites and watched state are per user and are stored on your server, so they match every other Jellyfin client you use. Signing out removes that user's token from the Apple TV.
Playback
Jellusion plays files directly. Video is decoded by the Apple TV itself, audio is decoded on the device and output as multichannel PCM (E-AC-3 is passed through), so your server does no transcoding and the picture arrives as it was mastered.
Supported formats
- Containers: MKV, MP4, and the common legacy containers (AVI, MPEG-PS, ASF, OGG, MXF)
- Video: HEVC (including Dolby Vision profile 8.1, HDR10, HDR10+) and H.264; MPEG-4 Part 2 and MJPEG where the device supports them. Video is never decoded in software.
- Audio: TrueHD, DTS and DTS-HD, AC-3, E-AC-3, AAC, FLAC, ALAC, PCM and the usual lossy codecs
- Subtitles: text (SRT, ASS/SSA with styling), bitmap (PGS, VOBSUB), embedded or external, plus subtitle search through the providers configured on your server
"This server refuses to play the file"
If your server reports that direct play is not allowed, the user account has direct playback disabled in the Jellyfin dashboard (Users › your user › Media Playback). When direct play is refused and the server allows transcoding, Jellusion falls back to the server's transcoded stream; when both are off, the file cannot be played by any client and the app says so.
Picture and sound settings
For the best result on an Apple TV 4K set Settings › Video and Audio › Match Content to match both dynamic range and frame rate. Jellusion switches the display to the content's format when that is on. AirPods and other Bluetooth audio work; the play/pause control on the earbuds controls the player.
Frequently asked
My server is not in the list
Discovery only sees servers on the same network as the Apple TV. Use Add Server Manually with the address, including the port if it is not the default (Jellyfin's default is 8096).
Nothing appears under Continue Watching
Start watching something on any Jellyfin client and stop part-way; the row fills from your server's resume list, which the app reads each time it opens.
Top Shelf is empty
The Home-screen Top Shelf shows your Continue Watching and Next Up items once you have signed in and opened the app at least once. It refreshes when the app is used.
Does the app collect anything?
No. There is no analytics, no crash reporting and no account of ours. See the privacy policy.
